Continuing Education Key to Advancement

Saturday, September 10th, 2011

Today’s economy has placed additional strains on almost everyone in the corporate work force. As jobs and promotions become increasingly scare, it’s no wonder so many are considering a trip back to the classroom in an effort to develop a more marketable resume, learn additional skills relating to your current position, or acquire new expertise or proficiency in a field you would like to move in to. Let’s be completely honest here; competition for the good jobs-those with a respectable salary, benefits and permanence-is growing increasingly brutal. Even those with saleable skills are finding it hard to land a high-quality position with a highly regarded company. Once there, the test becomes moving up the corporate ladder, a thorny job in its own right.

Sadly, many of us stuck in jobs which require a great commitment of time and leave us with little time to think about continuing education. Factor into that equation responsibilities such as family, children, home commitments and more, and it sometimes seems that bettering yourself through continued education is simply more than one can be expected to handle.

For folks like that, there are colleges that focus exclusively on work related subjects like sales training, management training courses and team development, all abilities much valued in the modern corporate workplace. By honing in strictly on the target subject, it is possible to develop a large amount of practical information, glean the required skills for the job and attain a satisfactory level of proficiency in a relatively brief amount of time.

These sort of colleges focus on career skills in an attempt to help you excel at the job you already do, to expand your abilities into previously untested areas and to give you a sense of self-assurance that, yes, you can ascend up the corporate ladder and hopefully obtain your dream job. Depending on your employer, tuition expenses may be partly or even entirely covered by your current employer. It is, after all in your company’s best interest to assist you in developing a skill set that will in the end benefit both yourself and your employer.

When it comes to things like sales training in particular, moving your skill set to the next level can result in immediate financial returns, again both for yourself and the company for which you work. With today’s market as it is, sales are the one place where economic gains may be easily seen as they happen.

Of course, management training also is key to obtaining the best performance from your entire staff, so any advances in management technique can go a long way toward advancing the well-being of the entire company.
